| Summary: | ABSTRACT: Serial arterial blood pressure measurements and exogenous creatinine clearance determinations were performed on 8 partially nephrectomized dogs (with residual renal function approximatedly 1/3 of normal) fed two different concentrations of dietary sodium for 12 weeks. In a double cross-over design, dogs were fed 0.18 percent sodium or 1.3 percent sodium on a dry weight basis for 3 consecutive 4-week observation periods. No significant difference in serial blood pressure measurements was found in comparisons between the group fed 1.3 percent sodium and the one fed 0.18 percent sodium. Similarly, no significant difference in serial exogenous creatinine clearance was found in comparisons between the group fed 1.3 percent and one fed 0.18 percent sodium. Therefore, it was concluded that normal (1.3 percent) sodium intake is not associated with significant hypertension in dogs with this degree of functional renal impairment, and changes in GFR are not dependent upon dietary intake at the concentrations tested. |
