Niall Kenny, seller, description of variant issues: Collation: [12], 342, 001-008, 343-352, [4] p.; A2, b2-c2, B2-Rrrr2, Ssss1v, ***Ssss24, Ssss2r-Xxxx2; 36.5 x 22.5 cm (folio). Description: A1r title, A1v blank, A2r-v dedication, b1r-c2v preface (‘To the reader’), 1-342 text, 001-008 text, 343-352 text, Xxxx1r-Xxxx2v ‘Excellent names for horses...’ This is NOT the same book as that published in 1658 (see preface of above book) despite the same title. This book deals with the subjects slightly differently, and was never issued with plates (see Smith Vol. 1, p313-315). A Dublin edition appeared in 1740. To make things even more complicated this title was also translated into French (“Methode nouvelle et invention extraordinaire de dresser les chevaux”) with editions in 1671, 1674, 1694, and 1727. In addition there were further French versions (“Nouvelle methode pour dresser les chevaux”), from Solleysell, in 1677 and 1700. Pagination errors: pp 98 & 99 given as ‘94’ & ‘95’, 150 given as ‘152’. The Edinburgh copy has additional pagination errors, i.e. 97 as ‘93’, 100 as ‘96’ resulting in the whole of gathering Cc being misnumbered. It seems clear that there were at least two issues of this book though this has not been noted previously. My copy, as collated above, seems complete and is identical with the Dingley, BL, G, RVC and Durham copies. In the alternative copy there are additional pages (numbered 009-040) in a different set of gatherings (a2-h2). These extra pages differ from pages 001-008 in having the word “New” in the running title is spelt “Nevv”. In addition there may be 2 or 3 variants of this presumed 2nd issue. Three copies of the second issue have been examined and they differ from each other in subtle details of these additional pages 009-040: i.e. 1) in the NLS copy, from p 029-040, the word “Drefsing” in the running title changes to “Dreffing”, while in the HL copy (on EEBO) only pages 033-040 have this; 2) the text differs significantly between the HL and NLS in p 029-032, plus they have different woodcut ornaments on p 029 and 032; 3) there is an additional woodcut ornament on p 038 in the NLS and Edinburgh copies not found in the HL copy, and, 4) there is a slightly different sequence of woodcuts on p 040 between the NLS and HL copies. Uniquely the Edinburgh copy has both variants of pp 029-032, but pages 033-040 are the same as the NLS copy. The copy in NLS is the 2nd issue and, in addition to the extra pages, the catch-word at the bottom of p 342 has been changed to ‘TO’ which is correct for the next page 001, unlike my copy which has the catch word ‘OF’ at the bottom of p 342, which is correct if the next page is 343. However the shadow of the removed letter ‘F’ can just be made out on the page. Interestingly the 2nd issue copy from the Huntingdon has the same catch-word as my copy. In the NLS copy the additional pages 005-040 are bound in at the end. The NLS copy is in completely original binding and has clearly never been re-bound. The title page of NLS copy is identical to mine, including the position and breaks in the lines outlining the text. The Edinburgh copy has several interesting variants from other copies, i.e.: the lines surrounding the text on the Edinburgh title page are slightly different, esp in the bottom left corner; there are additional pagination errors (97 as ‘93’, 100 as ‘96’); p 342 catch-word ‘OF’; the order of the extra leaves is very odd and they are mis-bound between pp 306-307, the order being 009-032, 001-008, 029-040. The Edinburgh copy is especially interesting as it has all the variant additional pages together, i.e. it has pp 029-032 duplicated but in doing so has both variants of the text (and the variant running title). Having compared multiple copies of this book it seems likely that there were initially only eight extra pages (001-008), and then more additional leaves were added (009-040) in later printings, but then pp 029-032 had to be completely re-written and at that time the ornaments and running titles were also altered. The possible sequence of issues is possibly RVC/D/G/BL/my copy, then Huntingdon, then Edinburgh, then NLS. I suspect the NLS copy represents the final version as the text has been corrected, all ornaments added, and the catch-word on p 342 corrected.
