| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: Smith (III, 111) says he had not seen 1st edition (1802), nor can I trace any copy with a title page of that date; the only other reference for that date comes from Huth; even the 1805 book has preface dated 1804, and no reference to a previous edition. However the Encyclopaedia Britannica for 1823 states that the book was to be issued in 16 parts and that the first part was issued in 1802. I suspect therefore that, as it is such a huge book, the issues were only completed in 1804/05, hence the difference in dates. Pagination in Dingley is possibly wrong as claims to have 871pp text although a copy in Nat. Lib. Medicine also says has 871 pp; NSTC also has no record of any other edition. The plates are mainly copies of Stubbs, with some Gibson, Sainbel and Coleman. Preface signed: "Dundalk, May 13th, 1804." John Clewlow description: The first encyclopaedic work to use the word 'veterinary' in the title. |
