| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: The first issue, ESTC T102165, is distinguished as the “Lectures on elements of farriery” has several features of the 1793 1st edition. The leaves explaining the plates are from the 1st edition in issue 1, i.e. its makes mention on pp vi-vii of the brass and plaster models of shoes and feet. Despite this the extra plates 3 and 4 are included. By contrast in issue 2, these pages are completely altered, stating that plates III & IV are inserted instead of the shoes and foot models, and it states that these models are no longer being issued with the book, although they are still available if required. Some copies of the book (presumed issue 1) also have an additional leaf (A6) of author's advert in the preliminary pages to the “Lectures”, advertising a book on “Running Thrush or the Grease” which never seems to have appeared. This page was present in the Edinburgh copy of the first issue (and in the 1st issue on ECCO from the BL), but was not present in a copy of the second issue examined by me, but oddly was present again in the 3rd 1797 printing. Other 2nd issue copies are Dingley 547, York, Aberdeen, Bristol, NLS, C, none of which seem to have this extra advert leaf (based on the on-line pagination). The NLS copy certainly lacks this extra leaf, and is a clearly the 2nd issue. “An essay on the proportions of Eclipse”, is the 2nd Edition, with the imprint “London: Printed for Martin and Bain, Fleet-street, 1795”. “Lectures on elements of farriery”, is first edition, with the imprint “London: Printed for the author, 1793”, with the 4 plates as appeared in the 1797 edition below. The frontispiece in the Edinburgh, NLS and my copies are clearly the later form, and dated 1795. Dedication signed: “Peckham, December 10, 1794.” In the Edinburgh copy the “Posthumous Works” section title has been inserted as the general title page, and the general title page seems to be missing. The title of this is: “The posthumous works of Charles Vial de Sainbel, late Equery to the King, and head of the Academy at Lyons; ancient Professor of the Royal Veterinary School of the same city; demonstrator of comparative anatomy at Montpellier, and professor to the Veterinary College of London. Translated from the original French”, with the same imprint as the general title page. However another copy examined (clearly in original binding) also has this feature so it is possible that there are numerous variations on how this work could be bound, depending on what work you wished included. This other copy lacked the “Memoirs...” and had the frontispiece from the “Lectures on elements of farriery” as the main frontispiece, even though that work was not included. |

| Item Description: | The 'Lectures on farriery' is probably a reissue of the 1793 edition (with some plates dated 1795); in this issue the text of the roman pagination has been reset, and p. vii indicates that the horse shoes and model hoofs were not supplied with this issue. This issue has a final advertisement leaf. The account of Sainbel's life is probably by Granville Penn. Cf. ESTC. Publisher's advertisements last 2 unnumbered pages.
