| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: Scarce; not in Dingley or WSU. Plates are dated 1819. Some copies of this book have two publisher's advert leaves (dated August 1820) tipped in before the ffep; they are not in the Edinburgh or Glasgow copies, and are not intrinsic to the book. One examined copy had a loose advert leaf (clearly intended to be issued with this edition as it makes mention of specific plates and pages), advertising that models of the shoes and hooves illustrated on the plates were available in bronze. It is possible all copies of this 1st edition were supposed to have this but no others have survived, as it was never bound in. The postscript at the end of the text was clearly an addition after the initial printing, and actually has the signature marks U9-U11. Also leaf U8 is designated *U8 so suspect that has been altered as well. Hence the odd gap in the numbering. Printer's imprint: "Printed by Strahan and Spottiswoode, Printers-Street, London." Dedication signed: "Carlton Palace, February, 1820." The American edition was published in Boston in 1821 (Printed by Wells and Lilly). |
