Description
Summary:Genesta learns from her father that she is betrothed to the Lord Tyrant of Chiara and Forcenza. This news fills her with fear, although she does not know her future husband, or anything about him. Soon, she meets Lorenzo de Cerini, a young lord from Sienna. Realizing that she has fallen in love with this captain of fortune, she agrees to leave with him and marry him instead of Lord Chiara. The pair sneak away in the night, but are soon stopped by ten of the Lord Tyrant's men, who escort them to Chiara's fortress. In the fortress, Genesta lives as a virtual prisoner of the man her father has chosen to be her husband. Lorenzo, however, suffers a more unpleasant fate.
Item Description:"Concerning the short story 'The Betrothed,' about which people often ask me. It was a private printing a friend made about fourteen years or more ago, in order to test his private printing press. There were about six copies. It's a short story which one day I might rework as it has some good things in it, but is currently irrelevant either to my writing career or my publishing history." -Tanith Lee, quoted in Dragonfields, No 4, Winter 1983, page 25 (Charles de Lint, editor)"--Daughter of the Night, an annotated Tanith Lee bibliography."
The Cushing Library/Science Fiction copy was used to compile Daughter of the night : an annotated Tanith Lee bibliography.
