| Item Description: | Caption title. Reproduced from typewriting. "Circulated to vindicate the principle of free expression in religious as in all other matters". James Kirkup's poem was published in the 3 June 1976 issue of Gay news (London). The poem, written from the viewpoint of a Roman centurion, graphically describes him having sex with Jesus after his crucifixion, and also claims that Jesus had had sex with numerous disciples, guards, and even Pontius Pilate. The paper was successfully prosecuted in the Whitehouse v. Lemon case, along with the editor, Denis Lemon, for blasphemous libel under the Blasphemy Act 1697, by Mary Whitehouse, then Secretary of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture. |
