"The most influential Spanish military work of the late 16th century. It had a dozen printings in English, Italian and Spanish over the next sixty years. This is the second edition, previously recorded in a single example (Edinburgh): the first (1578) is known in only two copies (Madrid and Santiago, Chile). This is a cornerstone of the 1613 Reales Ordenanzas, the first official codification of Spanish infantry regulations. The text specifies the numbers of soldiers (or their relative proportions) in ideal troop configurations and gives instructions on coordinated troop movements. This is the first manual to describe the "walking wall" of harquebusiers adopted by the Austrians and deployed by all the Catholic armies throughout the Thirty Years' War. The dialog takes place along the banks of the Rhine between the great soldiers Alonso Vargas and Sancho de Londoño, both close friends and companions-in-arms of the author. Their conversation treats the three principal duties of the sergeant major--commanding troops on the march, in camp and in battle. They cover equipment, training and field fortifications, but their emphasis, however, is on tactics, including lengthening the front, increasing the use of portable firearms and reducing tactical units. ... This copy establishes when the the book was published. Its first owner, baron du Freques, signed the title and repeated his signature on the inside front wrapper adding both his motto (amour et fer) and the date 1586 on the inside front wrapper. Previously bibliographers and historians could only guess based on the privilege (15 May 1586).
