Description
Summary:Album of sheet music by various composers, chiefly piano pieces in various dance forms (waltzes, mazurkas, polkas, schottisches, quadrilles, etc.), and songs with piano or organ accompaniment, with words in French, Latin, or English. Most of the collection consists of issues of the Journal des demoiselles, a music magazine geared to young women published in Paris between 1833 and 1922; the issues appearing here date from from 1851 to 1855 (but not in that order). A few of these pieces were composed by women. The "Polka gesungen von Henriette Sontag" (pages [98-99]) and the last three pieces in this album were originally published in Germany.
Item Description:"M. P. Chandon de Briailles" may refer to Paul Chandon de Briailles, a member of of the Chandon de Briailles winemaking family (famous for Moët-Chandon champagne), and a published composer of similar music.
The January 1854 issue, pages [41-48], includes illustrations and detailed instructions on how to dance the cotillon ("Le Cotillon").
"Dieu", the pre-1917 Russian national anthem, is arranged for 4-part mixed chorus with French words (pages [94-95]).
At the bottom of pages [100-118]: "Gravée par Madame Nidart née Damours".
"Ophelia" by Casimir Gide and "Mazurka Les Reflets de mon Pays" by A. de Ronski handwritten in blue ink on pages [119-121].
Includes handwritten contents in the back of the volume.
