| Summary: | The collections of letters written by the Norman Bishop Arnulf of Lisieux and the Anglo-Saxon scholar John of Salisbury reveal much about the insights and convictions of their authors on the great conflict that kept the Church in suspense in the second half of the 12th century. The study analyzes the schismatic letters taking into account previous works such as Arnulf's diatribe against Gerard von Angoulême and the famous Policraticus by John of Salisbury. Not least, it shows that the papal schism and the dispute between the English ruler and Thomas Becket that broke out in 1164 did not take place on separate stages for contemporaries such as Arnulf von Lisieux and Johannes von Salisbury, as previously argued in research, but that they took place in whose eyes they were even mutually dependent. |
