| Summary: | Illustration by Betrand and Dété to accompany a report of a hyena hunt in Verviers, Belgium. Two hyenas recently bought from the Antwerp Zoological Garden escaped from a fairground exhibition. The tamer Camillus and his helper, "la negre Edouard Wilson" set out to catch the animals. A gathering of peasants and hunters, one of whom armed with a rifle intended to slaughter one of the animals. But Wilson begged them to let him act alone. He is pictured seizing one of the hyenas by the neck. Then he tied it up and loaded the living animal on his shoulders and carried it to a nearby farm. An hour later, the two wild beasts were reinstated in the menagerie. |
