| Item Description: | Title page is fully engraved. The emblems are after those engr. by Wm. Simpon, and others for earlier editions; those in the last 3 books of "Emblemes" are copied from Herman Hugo's "Pia desideria" and Quarles' verses in these books are translated or paraphrased from Hugo. "Hieroglyphikes of the life of man", originally published separately in 1638, has engraved divisional title page; pagination and register appear to be continuous. Verso of final leaf contains advertisement for books printed for Gillyflower and Freeman. Numerous errors in pagination. Reproduction of the original in the National Library of Scotland. |
