| Item Description: | First two words of title in Greek characters. Authorship of the Eikon basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Place of publication from Wing. Frontispiece of Charles in prison saying prayers, accompanied by a bishop; not described by Madan, possibly not part of original publication. Signatures: A-N. Madan identifies this as the 15th edition, first issue, lacking the "Prayers"; printer not identified. Identified on UMI microfilm "Early English books, 1641-1700", reel 2169 as Wing E293 (which is Madan 15, second issue). Copy tightly bound with slight loss of printing. Reproduction of the original in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. |
