Description
Item Description:"Eikōn Basilikē. The pourtraicture of his sacred Majesty in his solitudes and sufferings" and "A perfect copie of prayers used by His Majestie in the time of his sufferings" have separate title pages dated 1649.
With a portrait frontispiece of Charles I and a folding plate, bound in front of Eikōn Basilikē, signed: Guil. Marshall sculpsit, representing Charles with the crown of thorns in his right hand.
Authorship of the Eikon basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king.
The imprint is false. Cf. Madan.
In this issue, the "Eikôn basilikê" lacks the "Explanation of the embleme" and the portrait of Charles II as Prince of Wales; this issue also appeared separately.
Annotation on Thomason copy: "Septem: First 1652".
Reproduction of the original in the British Library.
Physical Description:1 online resource ([16], 276; [4], 247, [17], 149-324 pages, [2] leaves of plates : illustrations, portraits.
