| Item Description: | Engraved title page, signed D. Loggan, sculp. The Kalendar is printed in red and black. The collation conforms generally to the signatures given by ESTC (A a-d6 e A-Z6 2a-2e6 2A-2M6 2N8 *6 2O-R6 2S8), except for the following issues: 1) the leaves A-C1, (Order of Morning and Evening Prayer) have been replaced with the 5 relevant leaves from a smaller format BOCP (presumably later, but appears 17thC). 2) The last leaf of the litany (2D1) is duplicated, with no loss or disruption to the rest of that signature. 3) There is an inserted leaf at the end of the section on "Forms of Prayer to be Used at Sea" [*6], from a smaller format work, with a prayer to be used ".in the time of War" (see photo in gallery). This is a leaf from a rare ephemeral work of just two leaves first printed in 1691 (ESTC R213190). The fact that the verso is blank is in keeping with the pagination of the 1702 edition (ESTC T70795)--From bookseller's descriptioin. The Psalter has a letterpress title page: The Psalter or Psalms of David, after the translation of the great Bible, pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches. London : Printed by the printers to the Kings most Excellent Majesty, MDCLXII. With woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials (some factotum); and typographical fleurons. "This was the first time the Book of Common Prayer was printed after the Restoration, by the royal printers, and contains the last major revisions to this work. There is another issue in a larger format ("royal folio"), but Wing (B3622) does not distinguish between the two. It was a consciously old-fashioned act to print this edition in black-letter, referred to by Cummings, in his work on the BOCP texts."--From bookseller's description. Purchased for the Cushing Library/Rare Books Collection by the Cushing Library. |
