| Summary: | "34 pages of handwritten verse that appear to be mid 18th century and almost undoubtedly by a Scotsman, first, "Godly Sarah or the Sighing Sister" (authored by "Ned Scrawl" and published in Edinburgh in 1737); "To Delia, being detain'd from her by Sickness" (we find no record of publication), Alexander Robertson of Struan's "Inscription of Mount Alexander" and also "Struan's Apology to Mrs. Alicia McKenzie" (Alexander Robertson was the 13th Chief of Struan, 1689-1749); "The Character of Sir Ewen Cameron..." (Cameron died in 1719), "On the Murther of King Charles the first by the then Schoolmaster of Leith, an Ode" (here, too, no record of publication we could ascertain), "An English-mans Grace over his Pock-pudding" (This was penned by Alexander Pennecuik and was first published in 1750), and finally "Thanksgiving after Moat" (no record we could find of publication) ... Because there are a number of holograph corrections, we can be reasonably sure that some of these efforts are probably original poems by the person who penned them and others are clearly the work of published authors. Since all of them have Scottish themes or authors, it is likely this was the work, original or not, of a resident of Scotland. Item #H1896"--Adapted from vendor's description. |
