"Between May 1789 and his death in April 1791, the statesman and revolutionary Mirabeau built this 7000-volume library to chart the progress of Man. His great coup was the acquisition of Buffon's library (pages 160-212), including many items annotated by the naturalist. He also owned Montaigne's annotated Odyssey and two hundred twenty-six manuscript facsimiles of 15th- and 16th-century printing types to help identify unsigned early printed books(!). This copy includes the separately published sixty-page author index and the printed list of prices realized (22 pages), obtained by sending the final leaf of the catalog, a coupon, to Belin."--From vendor's description.
