Description
Summary:"First Mexican edition (printed the previous year at Rome). Pope Alexander VII's bull "Sollicitudo" affirming the position of the immaculatists that the Virgin Mary was conceived without sin and threatening penalties for any who celebrated the Festival of the Conception with any other view. This bull put to an end a debate that had raged in the church from the time of Aquinas. Although the Council of Basel defined the Immaculate Conception as a pious belief in harmony with the Church and Scripture, it was not until Alexander VII's bull that the Immaculate Conception became dogma. Spain had long advocated this doctrine and, as this Mexican imprint makes clear, saw to it that the official position of the Church was made known and enforced throughout the Spanish Empire. Extremely rare. JCB only in U.S. Not in Medina. Not in VD 17. For the 1661 Rome printing, see BN Spain."--Vendor's description.
