Description
Summary:The Book of Happiness and Sadness is Irina Birger's first monograph. It focuses on her works made during the last six years and includesprojects from the past ten years. The publication contains numerous drawings that were never or seldom exhibited, documentation of installations and performances, video stills and animation stills. The different projects are placed in a way that enhances their connection. 'The Book of Happiness and Sadness' presents the act of drawing as a self-contemplative study, and aims to provoke a similar contemplation in the viewer while leafing through her personal story in images. Graphic design Rimini Berlin has created a publication with a strong presence. Bold typography and different colored pages accentuates Birger's works. The numerous details in the drawings juxtaposes the monumental appeal of her other works, while enhancing their connection. Independent curator Katia Krupennikova has writtene an essay for the monograph that examines the core of Birger's work in connection with significant dilemmas in our society today, such as the group versus individualism and interdependency.
