Description
Summary:First Dutch edition of an extremely detailed and highly specialized account of the varieties of oak, best suited for shipbuilding and their uses by the Danish Master Shipbuilder Diderik Hansteen Funch (1791-1856). It was translated by H. Jansen, shipbuilder at the Dutch navy at Rotterdam. It covers the identification and choice of the varieties of oak, judging the quality of the cut trees, strength, defects, woodworm, diseases, warping and cracking, and the uses of the various sorts for interior and exterior shipbuilding. The coloured plates of oak cross-sections and the text provide valuable information for the silvophile or arboriculturalist. Funch supervised the building of the greater part of the Danish fleet at the time, and when he died in 1856 his obituary was given by the "Tidsskrift for Sövaesen", the Danish Maritime Journal, published at Copenhagen, in which he is praised for his indefatigable energy and untiring industry. Among the many ships that had been built by Funch, was also the corvette "Galathea" which under the command of Captain Steen Bille completed the first Danish circumnavigation. The fact that both author and translator were practicing shipbuilders adds to the book's authority as a primary source on shipbuilding and its terminology.--From bookseller's description.
