| Item Description: | "A short view of the life and reign" is by Peter Heylyn. The imprint is false; in fact printed in 1658 in London for Richard Royston and possibly Henry Seile (see Madan 64:second issue). "A short view of the life and reign" is probably a reissue, with preliminaries cancelled, of Wing H1735B, which was printed for Royston in 1658. The "Eikōn basilikē" was possibly printed by Robert White (see Madan 64:first issue). "Several speeches delivered by his Majesty" has separate pagination, with divisional title on ²B1. Within this series, "His Majesties messages for peace", "His Majesties letters, to severall persons", "His Majesties private letters to the Queen, and others", and "The papers which passed betwixt His Majestie and Mr. Alexander Henderson, at Newastle [sic]" each have separate divisional title, with continuous pagination and register. "Reliquiae sacrae Carolinae, together with severall additions : the second part" has separate title page, pagination, and register. Variant: title has "additionals". Within this series, "Eikōn basilikē" has separate title page in red and black dated "MDCXLVIII" in imitation of the first edition, with crown and skull ornaments. The work was originally attributed to Charles I, but was probably written by John Gauden, who included some authentic writings of the King. "The papers which passed between His Majesty and Mr. Marshall, Mr. Vines, Mr. Caril, and Mr. Seaman" has divisional title, with continuous pagination. "Additionall prayers used by His Majesty in the time of his sufferings and restraint" (caption title) begins on page 9. Signatures: A-F⁸ G², ²B-Z⁸, 2A⁴, ³A² ⁴A⁴ (-4A1 and 4A4) ³B-Q⁸ ²R² ²S⁴ ³S-Z⁸, ²2A-2B⁸ ²2C², ³R-Z⁸, ³2A-2B ³2C⁴. Title within ruled red border; initials. The frontispiece is signed: Guil: Marshall sculp. Errata on verso of G² (page 96, first sequence). Includes four final contents leaves. |
