Assumption Parish is the oldest Catholic parish in Canada, west of Montreal, and serves as a reminder of the early French settlers who farmed along the Detroit River, and give this region its unique heritage. On a local level, Assumption Parish was quite literally the heart of Windsor, both physically and symbolically, as the city grew and developed around the church. The impact of the parish on both our city and Canada at large is undeniable-the Ambassador Bridge was built paces from the church walls and out of Assumption College came the University of Windsor, making it one of Canada's earliest centres of higher learning. Thus, as we celebrate this benchmark anniversary for our nation and our city, this year is the perfect opportunity to record and share the story of Assumption Parish, which predates them both by 100 years and plays an important role in all of their stories."-- |
