Description
Item Description:"August 23rd, 1978"
Haven Can't Wait was written to introduce the music, poetry, and spoken-words of encouragement and activism of a veritable who's-who of "Pinko-Commie-Spade-Faggot" heroes of the day--all of whom were friends of Abbie Hoffman and believed in his cause. The play was produced by the Bring Abbie Home Committee, as Hoffman was in jail at the time, and directed by Rip Torn and Ciprian LoGiudice, with a set by Larry Rivers. The cast included Kinky Friedman, Jon Voight, Allen Ginsberg, Dave Dellinger, Ron Kovic, Ossie Davis, Odetta, Rip Torn, Rennie Davis, Taylor Mead, Paul Krassner, Jerry Rubin, Michael O'Donoghue, William S. Burroughs, Anne Waldman, Ramsey Clark, Paul Kantner, The Stillettos, Paul Krassner, Bobby Seale, and Abbie Hoffman (on tape and film); producers included William Kunstler and Mayer Vishner. Performed at the Felt Forum in New York City, August 23, 1978. The performance piece/play is framed as a fantastical courtroom trial replete with a judge, court reporter, defense counsel, prosecutor, witnesses, and a "havenly messenger," interspersed with musical performances and poetry readings.
The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture.
