| Item Description: | "#2" Middle Earth Clothing Company sold custom made clothes during "the summer of love" of 1967. There were at least two locations in Haight-Ashbury, one on Stanyan Street, and another on Grant Avenue. The company went out of business around 1970. Middle Earth is the fictional setting of much of British writer J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. His The Lord of the Rings was first published in three volumes in England in 1954 and 1955: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. It was a modest success in England, and was published in a U.S. hardcover edition by Houghton Mifflin. Tolkien's popularity in the U.S. climbed significantly in 1965, when Ballantine printed a revised paperback edition. |
