Description
Abstract:Seven of the major technical aspects of ocean disposal are discussed. Selected for discussion are the topics concerning the qualitative and quantitative properties of the waste materials, disposal methods, transport of materials within the water, effects of the wastes, legislation and regulations, critical quantities, disposal sites, alternatives to ocean disposal, and future trends of this disposal method. The author selected twenty-two of the more prominent philosophies dealing with ocean disposal. Each issue is discussed, and the author points out both a pro and con side to each philosophy whenever possible. The relationships between the technical aspects and the philosophies are shown in tables, and some are discussed. Many of the philosophies are based on the public's inadequate information concerning the technical issues of ocean disposal.
