Description
Summary:"First printed in Paris in 1512, De ratione studii is found here in a rare Mainz edition of 1521 printed by Johann Schoeffer. This is one of the major educational works by Erasmus, a concise condensation of his vision for a humanist school curriculum focused on grammar, rhetoric and composition informed by the study of the best classical Latin and Greek authors. For Latin Erasmus favours Terence, Virgil, Horace, Cicero and Caesar, while for Greek models he recommends Lucian, Demosthanes and Herodotus for prose, with Aristophanes, Homer and Euripedes for verse. Printed at the end of De ratione studii is the homily on the Christ child Concio de puero Iesu, written by Erasmus for use in the school newly-founded in 1510 by his friend John Colet (1467-1519) at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It is also found in a separately-printed Cologne edition of 1525. This homily by Erasmus was designed to be read aloud by a schoolboy in front of an audience of his peers. The child Jesus is projected as a model both of piety and learning, worthy of emulation by the students."--From vendor's information.
