Item Description:	Handwritten in ink. Verso of sheet post marked Aug. 5. Accompanied by Read's 1 leaf reply, dated the same day, sent from Philadelphia. Read was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President John Tyler, but because of Read's earlier views on Slavery (against expansion), he was opposed by the Democratic Southerners and his nomination was withdrawn.
