Founded by J.S. Buckingham in Jan. 1828. After the publication of three or four numbers Henry Stebbing, who had been associated with the periodical from the beginning, became assistant editor.

In July 1828 the Athenaeum absorbed the London literary chronicle. It was at this time purchased by John Sterling and F.D. Maurice, and was principally edited by them for the next half year. Maurice continued his editorial connection until 1839. About the end of 1829 the property was transferred to C.W. Dilke, who was principal editor from 1830 to 1846. T.K. Hervey was editor from May 1846 to 1853, W.H. Dixon from 1853 to 1869, Norman Maccoll from 1871 to 1900, V.H. Rendall from 1901 to 1916, J.M. Murry from 1919 to 1921.
