| Item Description: | Caption title. The Briggs Initiative / Proposition 6 was launched by California State Senator John V. Briggs. The initiative proposed that all lesbian and gay public school workers in California--and their supporters--be removed from their jobs. Opponents to the proposal included San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, California Governor Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter. Proposition 6 was defeated in November 1978 with the No vote achieving 58.4% of the 6,792,413 votes cast. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of a collection of items from the SCCRH (South California Council on Religion and the Homophile) published between 1965 and 1973 including minutes of meetings, bylaw resolutions, articles of incorporation, pamphlets, handbills, reports, etc. |
