| Item Description: | Throughout the magazine attempts made to portray Eltinge as a manly man who just so happens to have a career dressing as a woman on stage, a view of him boxing with "Gentleman" Jim Corbett, an article by him suggesting that women take up boxing, much on his Long Island farm where he lived with his mother and his preference for the overalls he can't wait to put on when he gets home, along with such descriptions of him as "a husky young man of 29, agreeable, manly, and without the slightest trace of the sissiness one might expect to find in the nature of a man who impersonates a woman." The vast majority of photos show him in his various guises as a woman. Includes ads for various beauty products for women, endorsed by him, with an emphasis on a cold cream that bears his name and image. The Fascinating Widow was a 1910 musical comedy written by Otto Hauerbach as a vehicle for Eltinge. Premiered at the Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey in November, 1910, with A. H. Woods producing. Woods toured the show around the United States, then brought it back to the Apollo in August 1911, before taking it to Broadway. Opened on Broadway at the Liberty Theatre in September 1911. After a seven-week run the show returned to the road, where it ran for several more years. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture. |
