Description
Summary:112 Greene Street was one of New York's first alternative, artist-run venues. Started in October 1970 by Jeffrey Lew, Gordon Matta-Clark and Alan Saret, among others, the building became a focal point for a young generation of artists seeking a substitute for New York's established gallery circuit, and provided the stage for a singular moment of artistic invention and freedom that was at its peak between 1970 and 1974. This extensively researched volume is the culmination of David Zwirner's January 2011 exhibition of the same name, gathering a number of works exhibited at 112 Greene Street (by Matta-Clark, Vito Acconci, Tina Girouard, Suzanne Harris, Jene Highstein, Larry Miller, Alan Saret and Richard Serra among others), alongside extensive interviews with many of the artists involved, a timeline of the early years at 112 Greene Street and installation views of the 2011 exhibition.
Item Description:"The exhibition 112 Greene Street: The Early Years (1970-1974) at David Zwirner in 2011 marked one of the first times that artworks shown at this influential space were exhibited together in a different context. Focus was given to Gordon Matta-Clark, with contributions by Tina Girouard, Suzanne Harris, Jene Highstein, Larry Miller, Richard Nonas, Alan Saret, Richard Serra, and Rachel Wood. For this publication, the selection has been broadened to include several more individuals, who all contributed to creating 112 Greene Street's legacy. The show's curator, Jessamyn Fiore, interviewed most of the participating artists along with Vito Acconci, Alice Aycock, Liza Béar, Bill Beckley, Carol Goodden, Mary Heilmann, Alanna Heiss, G.H. Hovagimyan, Richard Landry, Jeffrey Lew, Ruth Maleczech, Ned Smyth, and George Trakas"--Page 11.
