| Summary: | In 2015, Andrzej Steinbach published the photo book Figure I, Figure II, in which two women were portrayed. In his new book, he expands the circle of people to deal with the question photographically. Why should one mistrust binary ordering schemes and turn to figurations of the third? As a photographic starting point, Steinbach serves the classic format of the group portrait or family portrait. All involved figures look towards the camera and look towards the viewer. But in the center of the image, only one person is visible, the others are cut. In the series, the models change their positions and also the clothes, so that a confusion arises and the three-way constellation gets out of order again and again. The title "Society begins with three" is based on the eponymous essay by Ulrich Bröckling and is Steinbach's successful photographic realization of this idea. |
