| Item Description: | Issued to accompany an exhibit, curated by Johan Kugelberg, celebrating 40 year anniversary of the release of the album 'Velvet Underground & Nico', held at John McWhinnie at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller in New York, April 12 - May 12, 2007. Drawn from public and private collections, the exhibit featured reproductions of rare printed work, posters, books, silk-screens, ads, reviews, and ephemera, as well as albums and photographs. The album was recorded with the first professional line-up of the Velvet Underground: Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker. At the instigation of their mentor and manager Andy Warhol, and his collaborator Paul Morrissey, German singer Nico was also featured. She had occasionally performed lead vocals for the band. She sang lead on three of the album's tracks 'Femme Fatale', 'All Tomorrow's Parties' and 'I'll Be Your Mirror', and back-up on 'Sunday Morning'. In 1966, as the album was being recorded, this was also the line-up for their live performances as a part of Warhol's multimedia event series 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable', first performance was 'Up-Tight'. The catalog tells the story of the album and the Velvet Underground through the historical artifacts of the period. Edited by Johan Kugelberg and John McWhinnie featuring texts by Jon Savage, Jack Womack, Jonathan Richman, William Gibson and Richard Prince. Facsimile of Lester Bang's typescript for the May 1971 feature in Creem Magazine. 200 copies printed for Ectoplasm Press. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy is [number] 51/100 and is signed by the curator. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy of the catalog is signed by Reed and Tucker. |
