First South Carolina Volunteers, the first officially recognized Black regiment of the U.S. Army, formed in 1862 (re-designated 33rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops, in February 1864). In October 1864 regiment was in Virginia, engaged in the siege of Petersburg and Richmond. The Cushing Library/Ragan Military copy contains a bookseller's description. |
