| Item Description: | Text under image left reads: "April 12, 1864, Union: (Maj. Booth, Com.) colored t[roops]. 262 (Maj. Bradford) w. t. 276 & civ., 350 k[ille]d., 60 w[ounde]d. & 164 mis[sing]. Conf.: (Gen. Forrest) 20 k[ille]d. & 60 w[ounde]d." One of thirty-six Civil War battles scenes produced as chromolithographs between 1884 and 1894 by the Chicago lithographic firm of Kurz & Allison. The firm was sympathetic to the role African-American troops played in the War and this print is a rare example of a Civil War battle scene in which the participants are clearly depicted as African-Americans. Although their Civil War prints enjoyed popular success, the images often contain numerous historical inaccuracies. |
