| Item Description: | Typed letter on official headed notepaper "The Secretary of the Navy, Washington". Signed in ink. Envelope addressed in typescript to "Mr. Bruce MacLeish, 1 S. State Street, Chicago, Ill.", also official "The Secretary of the Navy, Washington". Postmarked MAR 27 1920. Letter thanking Bruce, the brother of Kenneth, for sending the book [Kenneth: a collection of letters written by Lieut. Kenneth MacLeish, U.S.N.R.F.C., dating from his enlistment and during his services in the Aviation corps of the United States navy, edited and arranged by his mother, privately printed, 1919]. Expressing how proud he is of Kenneth's Navy service and "I was happy to name of our destroyer for him". Lieutenant Kenneth MacLeish, USN (19 September 1894 - 14 October 1918) was an officer in the United States Navy during World War I. A Naval aviator, he received the Navy Cross posthumously for his combat actions. The destroyer USS MacLeish (DD-220) was named for him. Kenneth MacLeish's sister, Ishbel, went to Philadelphia at the request of Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, on 18 December 1919 and sponsored the ship at her launching. Kenneth was the brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Archibald MacLeish. Purchased for the Cushing Library/Ragan Military Collection by The Cushing Library.
