| Item Description: | Title from portfolio. Leaf from the original edition of the 42-line Gutenberg Bible printed in Mainz, approximately 1454-1455. Latin text in black letter ("Gothic") type, 2 columns. At head of recto: "Ezechiel" and "115" in non-decorative ms. ink. Comprises Ezekiel chapters 21:9 to 22:31. Rubricated: Capital of "Et factum" is a 2-line letter in red. Capitals at beginning of each sentence have been filled with red. Accompanied by a descriptive sheet from the bookseller: "A leaf of the first issue of the first edition of the Bible and the first book printed with moveable metal types ... The present leaf is from ... [an] imperfect copy secured by Scribners in 1953 ... originally discovered in a peasant's hut in Olewig, near Trier, by the librarian Wyttenbach." |
