Summary:The work, based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language dramatic play, La Tosca, is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples's control of Rome threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. The cruel and lustful police chief uses the jealousy of the famed singer Tosca to make her betray her lover who has hidden an escaped political prisoner. To save her lover, Tosca agrees to give herself to the police chief, but learns too late that he has tricked her when her lover is executed.
