| Item Description: | One of three issues printed by Adam Islip. Cf. STC. In this issue the printer's name is absent and the title is within an ornamental border (McKerrow & Ferguson 148). Other variants of the 1598 Chaucer have a different architectural border around the title page, and have either imprint: London, Printed by Adam Islip, at the charges of Bonham Norton. Anno 1598; or imprint with Thomas Wight in place of Norton's name. Cf. STC. Gothic type. Title within architectural border, bearing date 1574. The Canterbury tales, The Romaunt of the Rose, and The Story of Thebes: compiled by Iohn Lidgate, monke of Bury, are each preceded by half-title within border showing the houses of York and Lancaster, terminating in Henry VIII. The portrait of Chaucer, preceding the life, has engraved border giving his "Progenie," with coats of arms, etc. Chiefly in verse. Includes spurious works. "The Canterbvry tales", "The romavnt of the rose", and "The story of Thebes" have sectional title pages, each within an ornamental border (McKerrow & Ferguson 75). Based upon the editions of William Thynne and John Stow. Editor's dedication to Sir Robert Cecil signed: Tho. Speght. Signatures: a̲⁶ b-c⁶ [par.]⁴ A-U⁶ 2A-2T⁶ 2U-2X⁸ 2Y-4A⁶ 4B⁸. Leaf b1 signed c1; leaf [par.]3 signed A3; leaf 2Q3 signed Q3; leaf 2Z1 signed Zs1; leaf 3B4 is unsigned; leaf 3U2 signed 3T2. Initial leaf and final leaf are blank. Printed in double columns. Head- and tail-pieces; initials. Numerous errors in foliation. In some copies of this issue fol. 83 is misnumbered 80; in others fol. 83 is correctly numbered. In some copies fol. 194 is misnumbered 164; in others fol. 194 is correctly numbered, with the 4 inverted. The Cushing Library/Laughlin Collection copy is numbered fol. 83 and fol. 164. This copy contains the bookplate of John Gretton, Stapleford, and is inscribed by Tho[ma]s Wood[house], 1834, on the front free endpaper. |
