Description
Item Description:Undated manuscript devotional from Mexico. The illustrations, pigments, and endpapers appear to be 19th century, but the orthography preserves the long S, the double S in words such as "passo", and the use of the accent grave but non-use of the acute, which are more typical of 18th century Spanish.
Decorative borders and initial capital letters. Capital letters and certain phrases in red ink. Images at the end of each meditation refer to aspects of that day.
The Illustration for Holy Thursday depicts Jesus washing the feet of an apostle (Peter?); the one for Good Friday shows Christ bleeding, crowned with thorns, and chained to a post. The final page includes images of the instruments of his Passion (cross, spear, crown of thorns, lash, crowing cock, etc.)
