Contains over 1,800 illustrations. Originally printed by Anton Koberger with woodcuts by various artists, including Albrecht Dürer, in 1493. Johann Schönsperger produced pirated editions in German and Latin. "First pirated and portable edition" -- bookseller's note on rear paste-down. "Hie endet sich das buch der Cronick un[d] geschichten mit figure[n] un[d] pildnissen vo[n] anbegin[n] d[er] welt biss auf dise unser zeit Gedruckt un[d] vole[nd]et in d[er] kayserlichen statt Augsburg duch Ha[n]nsen Schoenberger Im jar nach Cristi geburt. M.cccc.xcvi. am. xviii. tag des. Herbstmonates." The Cushing Library/Laughlin Collection copy contains the bookplate of Carolus Dexter, with a handwritten note on it that says "Very rare and curious." Above the bookplate is a manuscript paragraph in which a former owner wrote the bibliographic information for the edition printed by Koberger in 1493, followed by a paragraph praising Koberger for his work on the Chronicle. This copy is annotated throughout and has "1735" written upside down at the bottom of the front paste-down. |
