Complete original leaf from the Sloan-Krech copy of the Catholicon which was broken up prior to World War II and sold a leaf at a time.--From bookseller. In double columns and rubricated. Text contains entries from "Paxillus" to "Pecunia". The first printed book of a work in the field of secular learning. The Catholicon was a Latin dictionary, which included grammar and an encyclopedia-dictionary covering all fields of knowledge, written by John Balbi in the thirteenth century (finished in 1286) and previously available only by hand-written copies. The name of the work, Catholicon, indicates it was intended to be universal in scope. The complete volume bears the date of printing, but not the name of the printer. Many have argued for Gutenberg having printed it; others argue for Peter Schoeffer, and other printers have been suggested. |
