He has studied the Lahu for over twenty years, and believes the best way to modernize the Lahu is to teach their daughters Chinese so they can enter mainstream Chinese society and lead their people forward. In 2001 with Ford Foundation support Teng Xing built a boarding school for 46 girls in the Lahu hills.
