| Abstract: | The False Children follows an eight-year-old refugee, Yousef, who has run away from home. The boy discloses that the man and woman he has been living with are not his real parents. And as the programme reveals, this is not a rare incident. Many refugee children have been "reunited" with false parents. In The False Children, we accompany Yousef on a dramatic, highly emotional journey back to the parents in Iraq, who originally dispatched their son to a faraway country in Europe. We appreciate Yousef's longing to see his family and his trepidation at returning to them. We are also present at the thought-provoking encounter between two very different approaches to childrearing--an encounter that does not turn out quite as expected. |
