"The Christian name appeared only on the first edition, and Dove was no doubt one of the names invented by the Cambridge press," according to Bernard Capp, English almanacs, 1500-1800. Ithaca, N.Y. : Cornell University Press, 1979, page 304. Title page in red and black, within type ornament border; roman and italic type. Part [2] has separate title page, within type ornament border : "Dove 1678 the latter part of this almanack for the year of our Lord God 1678." Beginning sections include "Common notes and moveable feasts" for 1678; the terms for the year, during which superior court is in session; the relationships between parts of the body and the signs of the zodiac, with small woodcut illustration of the anatomical man; and an account of important events from 1640 to the present. Calendar in red and black, with two pages for each month noting Dominical Letters, and saints' days; positions of the planets; weather predictions; and, at the end, a list of the English kings. The second part of the almanac contains information on eclipses for the year, the relationship of a man's visage, hair, and stature to the planet under which he was born; tides; weights and measures for different commodities; interest computations; and rules for the husbandman. The Cushing Library/Laughlin Collection copy is bound in gilt-paneled red morocco, with the crowned monogram of Charles II in each corner and horizontal vellum divider strips between each almanac. It was bound in the workshop of Samuel Mearne -- bookseller's description. The Cushing Library/Laughlin Collection copy is a Sammelband (bound with) of 23 almanacs.
