Description
Summary:Image of panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. At the end of the 1985 Candlight March honoring Harvey Milk and George Moscone, organizer Cleve Jones asked fellow marchers to write down the names of friends and loved ones who had died of AIDS. The AIDS Quilt was inspired by placards with these names which were taped to the side of the San Francisco Federal building, which looked like a patchwork quilt. Jones, with others, made plans for a larger memorial, and organized the NAMES Project Foundation. People in cities affected by AIDS sent panels to San Francisco and volunteers supplied time and materials. The Quilt was displayed for the first time on the National Mall in Washington D.C. during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 11, 1987. It included 1920 panels and covered a space larger than a football field.
