(Paris : Charles Perier, 1555) The Cushing Library/Rare Books copy contains a letter from Adolph O. Knoll to Herman P. Dean and an invoice for this book, both dated 13 March, 1943, the bookseller's description, and contains a manuscript note on the title page. First edition of Nicole Volkyr de Serouville's translation. Title vignette: device of C. Wechel (Silvestre, number 924). The full-page woodcuts are copied from the German edition of Vegetius printed by Stainer in Augsburg, 1529 ... cf. Murray, Cat. of ... early French books, II. n. 563, and Cat. of ... early German books, II, number 420. The so-called "Modesti libellus De vocabulis rei militaris" is a forgery by Pomponius Laetus or one of his pupils, based upon Vegetius.
