Description
Summary:"The chief goal of the educational process is to learn how to learn; to acquire knowledge and skills that may be successfully used in further learning and in making a better adjustment to the changing objective and social worlds in which we live. This text in the psychology of learning attempts to explain the general nature of this learning process; to show when and why learning occurs, how it takes place, and how it may be directed so that all desirable acquisitions may be made with the least expenditure of time and energy on the part of the learners. The book should be of special interest to psychologists and students of human nature who are interested in the scientific aspect of the psychology of learning since the attempt is made in it to bring together and interpret all the facts about the learning process that have been gathered by the experimental studies of learning during the past thirty-five years. It is hoped that the presentation of these facts and the interpretation of them will stimulate further study of the many problems that our present knowledge of learning does not permit us to solve. The importance of such investigations for individual and social life and their practical significance for all educational endeavors should make a strong appeal to all who are qualified to undertake such investigations. The book is intended primarily, however, to serve as a text for teacher-training courses in colleges and in schools or departments of education. It also may be used by teachers in service who desire to improve their methods of teaching by individual study or by undertaking courses of professional study conducted by their principals or superintendents"--Preface.
