|a In 1853 Joseph E. Roy took a position with the American Missionary Association (AMA) serving as first pastorate at a church under its care in Brimfield, Illinois. In 1855, he was called to lead Plymouth Church in Chicago where he continued to speak of abolition regularly. Roy became a district secretary for the Western District of the AMA in 1868, and by 1878 he was a field superintendent based in Atlanta. In 1885, he became Western District Secretary for the AMA, and he served in this capacity until his retirement in 1903. He also had a leadership role in the American Home Missionary Society. He served as chairman of the World's Congress on Africa at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
