| Item Description: | In 1853 Joseph E. Roy took a position with the American Missionary Association (AMA) serving as first pastorate at a church under its care in Brimfield, Illinois. In 1855, he was called to lead Plymouth Church in Chicago where he continued to speak of abolition regularly. Roy became a district secretary for the Western District of the AMA in 1868, and by 1878 he was a field superintendent based in Atlanta. In 1885, he became Western District Secretary for the AMA, and he served in this capacity until his retirement in 1903. He also had a leadership role in the American Home Missionary Society. He served as chairman of the World's Congress on Africa at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The talk was "illustrated by 75 stereopticon views".
